I've got my own method for the shadow battle... Lag behind him a bit (but keep moving). When he uses chaos spear, go full speed ahead and he's open to attacks for a few seconds. Homing attack him. It's never failed me.

they probably improved the animations and stuff like that for the GCN version. LOL when you unlocked battle stages
