@joshwoolaghan its not a full size or a compact. they call it the "service model". the full size has got a 5in barrel and the compact just has a shorter grip. if you buy this gun and dont know that theres somethin wrong.

I receive the same gunon 1/28/12 as a gift from my wife for being a good boy..lol..anything she pays for with her money is good ..lol..but anyway I keep seeing these xd 40 vids that came with all the goodies mine didn't ,but I guess that's cause mine was free to me as a gift I shouldn't be crying,lol,I like it tho,it's not to shabby...lol

The empty casing is from the factory showing the gun fired and worked properly it doesn't provide ballistic proof what gun it came from the actual bullet is used for that a casing doesn't give sufficient evidence for police in court

empty casing is also ballistics proof too. in case your xd is ever used in a crime it can be proven without a doubt that this weapon was the same one used.

I didn't read through all the other comments, but the empty shell is the firing pin fingerprint for your gun. Go hide it in a safe place, it's proof that your gun belongs to you if you know what I mean. It's also like 1dabirdman said Q/C from SA. Hope you enjoy your new toy.
