What if there were 2 variables? Ex: 2x+y= 3x-7.

@JustinDaChink When you have two variables in a linear equation you must have 2 different equations (a system of equations) to get a distinct solution for x and y. With a single equation you can use any value for one of the variables and get a corresponding value for the other.
"Solving Systems of Linear Equations" is lesson 205 at mathmadesimpledotcom

ex.2
8k-19=-2k+31:
8k+2k=31+19?
Im confused.

@MilburnsNZ Work with equations by performing the same operation each side. The object is to get the letters on one side and numbers on the other.
To get rid of the -2k on the right we add 2k on the right and 2k on the left
8k - 19 +2k = -2k + 2k +31
10k - 19 = 31 Add 19 to each side
10k -19 +19 = 31 + 19 (the shortcut is to follow the rule: moving a term from one side of the equation to the other changes its sign)
To Continue then
10k = 50 divide each side by 10 to get k = 5
