Lights out with Queen of Funk!

Betty goes at it full-throttle in this scorcher. She leaves it to interpretation but here's a few sketches of possibilities.

If the 60's was the Empowerment decade -from King to X to Che to Chavez to the Counterculture- then the 70's was the Liberation decade. There were so many issues to address that what we know of as the 60's really stretches roughly from 1964 to 1975. The rise of Feminism and the lateral expression of sensuality were later, crucial extensions in that period.

Sexism is evil; but Sensuality is essential. The word "sex" can mean either gender or the sensual act. Folks who blur the two without distinction speak to neither well. Gender inequities are wrongs that should be righted. Sexuality is a spiritual and physical pleasure everyone has a right to. The best lights of Feminism understood this from the beginning, and do now with examples like Riot Grrl and Bust and Bitch magazines. Betty Davis was a progessive sensualist who was misunderstood and suppressed in her time by repressives and some confused progressives. Time has borne out the quality of her work and the merit of her stance.

"Liberation for all, Everything must be rethought." -funknroll

The first two albums have been just re-issued on CD, with remastered sound, extra songs, and great booklets with photos and interviews with Betty. Go to lightinthe attic(dot)com to check them out! The great third album, where this is from, called "Nasty Gal", is available in 'unofficial' form as a CD from Europe right now.

Beyonce is incapable of getting anywhere near this. This takes real life and soul, not imitation and millions of dollars. Betty Davis can do no wrong.

Betty got great pleasure introducing new words to music. This alblum was going to be down right nasty, so that's what she called it NASTY GAL. On THEY SAY I'M DIFFERENT the word that kicked her off was freak, as in HE WAS A BIG FREAK, and the word tramp, as in DON'T CALL HER NO TRAMP. On LOVE OR DESIRE the word was whore, as in WHOREY ANGEL. Betty never cursed nor spoke of any body parts, but she'd throw one of those words at you in a minute. Nothing about Betty was like anyone then, or now!

BETTY DAVIS'S OWN WORDS..."This song is about a nice girl who has been dating a guy for weeks, and the two of them are hot for each other. One night he has his house all to himself, and the girl comes over, she's invisioned a romantic evening. but when she gets there, he's got every light on in the house, he's answering the phone, he's answering the front door...This is what the girl would like to do, and what she'd like to say." A lovely scene, simple, innocent, then Betty would FUNK IT UP!

No Black female artist could come close to this... Betty lived in a time where you couls hang out with JB, Sly and Hendrix to name but a few... Black artists today like Puffy, Jay Z, Beyonce know how to make money and product... back then they made money from seriously raw talent...different times

What does Beyonce have to do with this song? They do two entirely different things. Can you just let these two women be great?
