ZZ Top is an American rock trio, formed in late 1969 in Houston, Texas, by Billy Gibbons (lead vocals and lead guitar), Dusty Hill (vocals, bass, and keyboards), and Frank Beard (drums).

ZZ Top has been together for four decades, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and was ranked number 44 on VH1 cable's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock." The band holds the distinction of being among the few rock bands still composed of its original recording members for nearly 40 years and until September 2006, the same manager/producer/image maker, Bill Ham.

ZZ Top reached peak commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s, scoring many hit songs during that era, but they remain together today and are still touring and releasing albums. ZZ Top was inducted by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the annual induction ceremony on March 15, 2004. Summarizing their music, Cub Koda wrote, "As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists working in the hard rock idiom ... while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support." Their song lyrics often feature sexual innuendo and tasteful humor.

Do you remember
back in nineteen sixty-six?
Country Jesus, hillbilly blues,
that's where I learned my licks.
Oh, from coast to coast and line to line
in every county there,
I'm talkin' 'bout that outlaw X
that was cuttin' through the air.

Anywhere, y'all,
everywhere, y'all,
I heard it, I heard it,
I heard it on the X.

We can all thank Doctor B
who stepped across the line.
With lots of watts he took control,
the first one of its kind.
So listen to your radio
most each and every night
'cause if you don't I'm sure you won't
get to feeling right.

Anywhere, y'all,
everywhere, y'all,
I heard it, I heard it,
I heard it on the X.

  • @thommytaranto I hear ya. I was one of those who said years ago that Eddie stole the riff from Billy.

  • The late, great deejay Wolfman Jack used to broadcast from Tijuana on a 100,000 watt flamethrower back in 1966..."Make your Clearasil do double duty, Judy!!!"

  • the X was a radio station in mexico that was so powerful you couldn't help but hear it

it bled over and dominated american stations the boys from houston got a lot of blues from them

  • @thommytaranto Hope you played stomp fuck with him.

  • Someone the other day said to me "Oh man, I can't believe that Billy Gibbons stole the riff from Van Halen's 'Hot For Teacher' for his shitty 'Heard It On The X' song!" Don't worry, that someone is no longer with us.

  • Power Trio stuff is the best! I played with a lot of great local bands where I had to be the lead and rhythm player, I learned a lot from these guys, Rush, too (I got into the guitar synth thing after that)....any 3 piece band was all right with me! Cuz you have to PLAY! Make it fat! Make it good!

  • @wthjrtx1 Thanks for the kind comment. I've actually been in Texas a couple times and always had a great time. I have a great story about the time some friends and I tried to find booze in a dry county.

  • @niagaraorbust YOU'RE A FAG
