A "good, clean hip check" is the use of the hip on an opponent's lower abdomen and/or pelvic region. Clipping, which is what this is, is a hit directed below the waist at a player's legs, hence the reason Shanny suspended him.

Watch Don Cherry's hip check videos people used to do it all the time. Although Marchand does it here in a awkward way where he just doesn't want to get hit so he cuts Salo low. Most times it's when a player is coming down on you and you are skating backwards
