I decided to see how fast Jaunty Jackalope (Ubuntu 9.04) would boot with a solid-state hard drive. I used Intel's new X25-E Extreme, which uses faster single-level cell (SLC) memory chips instead of slower multi-level cell (MLC) memory chips.

Total boot time from pressing power to Firefox loaded was about 22.5 seconds, with about 5 seconds of BIOS display on a Thinkpad. That means that Ubuntu 9.04 booted into Firefox in about 17.5 seconds.

  • Ive used ubuntu for about 3 months ish now and I have to say I'm at the point where I don't want windows back. At first I wasn't really into linux because it was foreign to me. But it does a lot of things that windows simply never did! I'm running mspaint in wine right now. The only thing about windows I miss is winamp and uTorrent.

  • @darkspl When something is free, you don't need to buy it, you just get it.

  • if windows 8 would be free I will buy it

  • @syahirSQRT2 yes, with most of it containing run-time or VGA glitches.

    PERIOD!

  • @TheAmeerx ubuntu can run most windows applications with wine (a linux program)

  • Try Arch + Xmonad, that's REALLY fast.

  • @Hoobes1 My god! Best description ever

  • windows is like pc cancer. Once it's in there, it just gets worse and worse through time. There is no real "cure" to it, unless you completely remove it and hope the hardware's still intact.

  • yay ubuntu is for servers and fast boot! yay! screw windows yay!

oh wait ubuntu dont run most of the programs!

mmm its bit harder to use than the windows, wait it got glitches and few sources to teach how to use it... so now its fast, unreliable and unusable!

    WHATS THE USE OF IT!

  • @Partianz I will have to disagree. If you are saying that because of the graphics, you can disable them. I've used Ubuntu and actually find it to be laggy. I love linux mint, but windows 7 has more functionality.

  • @Partianz nice!
