Back in September, for no reason I could consciously tell, I felt the urge to play A Whiter Shade of Pale. Problem: over seven years passed since last time I touched a piano keyboard, I could barely remember how to read music. By the way, I found a sheet and started learning itBut how course it wasn't precise at all! Time passed, this video is something I've searched in the past but never really found, I hope you enjoy it and find it useful.
I try to play it as Matthew Fisher plays it (well, he actually does different things every time, wich is in fact part of the fun, let's say "in his style"), it should be mostly correct.
The keyboard is a very good (but very old!) DX7 connected via midi to my mac, the emulation software is VB3 (sounds very good to me, bough immediately when I found it), I'm using its split keyboard function, so it's like playing on two manuals, the settings are 6886, 00555 (I occasionally change this in other environment), a lot of reverb (this also changes depending on the environment), percussion on, soft, slow 2nd (I know, this will make little sense if you never pocked around hammond clones, but is actually quite straightforward if you did). For the choruses I'm using a plain vibrato 3, but with a real leslie (I'n not quite satisfied of the emulated one, still find the vibrato a lot better) I vould surely use it, maybe with some chorusing. I don't usually change drawbar settings while playing this song but I know that matthew in some situations does.
Bass and drums are sequenced, guitar and piano were played some time ago, same for vocals (I know, still have to work on them).
Everything recorded using cycorder on my iphone.
I'm starting to be a bit perfectionist on this song, so it's probably better to just upload something and move on, ignoring the two small errors. Can you spot them?
Lovely playing my friend I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing.
