I'm English and I just start conversations by saying Hi or Hello. I Have started some conversations with something like that before.

Was it quite windy?

What? I am English and don't get this. What makes "It's very misty out here." a superior conversation starter? I have never started a conversation like that.

It's a period piece, it was very misty and all the conversations went.
"Misty innit?"
and then you got on with the serious business of talking.

Now of course you would talk about the kerazzy wind.

What if it's not misty if/when you meet an English person? Would pretending it's misty work? Do you condone lying to the English? Perhaps you could post a more generic opening gambit. I would find that very helpful as I seem to keep bumping into English people.
