Episode four of The History Hut is a discussion on the rise of Islam as a religious force, and the background of the man we know as the Prophet Muhammad.

We begin by looking at the young Muhammad as a trader out of Mecca and move forard to the moment when he begins to receive revelations frm Archangel Gabriel.

He was told to recite these revelations and his words were later written down and formed the Qu'ran. Before his death, he recited it in its entirety.

We then move to the message given through the Prophet - that there is only one god who has revealed himself through the revelations. We ask how this was received at Mecca, and what happens next. Muhammad moves to the town of Yathrib/al-Medina until he has enough followers to surge back to Mecca. It's at this time in Medina that the umma, or community of believers, forms.

So, 622 AD becomes year one of the Islamic calendar (the Jalali). We also cover the Hajj and what happens when this takes place.
