The former emergency relocations site for the government in the event of nuclear attack, the site has been abandoned since the 1980s since which time it has been kept as a decoy site until it's declassification at the end of 2004. Burlington has had many code names since it's conception in the early 50s, these include Stockwell, Subterfuge, Turnstile and more recently Site 3.

  • I'm curious to know why this isn't kept for the general population in the event of a global crisis or nuclear war.

The fact this is now an open secret, i.e. revealed by remains largely unknown, begs the question, where is the new bunker?

I often wonder what protocol we have in place to 'save' the population, if nuclear war happened. It appears there are no preparations to 'safe gaurd' the general population, on the elite politicians and aristocracy.

  • @Olafandlafandlaf it wouldn't really help the general population, if there was ever a serious nuclear attack the survivors would be the unlucky ones but it's the Government's duty to stay alive and manage what is left.

I'm sure there are plans now which we'll find out about in another 50 years.

  • Sorry I forgot to say great vid you are quite privaliged :) Bet you can't get into guardian hehe..

  • @ollyk22 Probably not, that's still used by BT.

  • Does this have a link to box tunnel or am I thinking of another site?

  • @ollyk22 when it was built it didn't have a link, the link to box tunnel was from the neighbouring ammunitions depot.

In the 80s a route between Burlington and the ammunition depot was built.

  • The government list of occupation during a nuclear war only listed women under the age of 26, so that they would be well within breeding age for the government staff. I've seen the list! Amazing place.
