Here's a couple pointers on that tone in a nutshell:
1) Fresh strings, Geddy uses Rotosound 66 I believe
2) Overdrive on a tube amp (as demonstrated in video)
3) Pluck the strings like you're trying to murder them
Also for YYZ, a little chorus.
