Conquistador - "Gene Pitney" - Year Song Released 1966

Eyes that mock the Raven.
Lips that shame the rose.
Arms that were my haven.
When she whispered low.

Conquistador, (my conqueror)
Conquistador...

Kisses made of fire.
Wild and proud the flame.
And the flame burned higher.
When she called my name.

Conquistador, (my conqueror)
Conquistador...

I was richer than a thousand kings.
Just to have her by my side.
But when I promised her a golden ring.
In my heart I knew I lied...

Conqueror so clever.
Never said goodbye.
But in my dreams forever.
I will hear her cry.

(Conquistador), Conquestador my conqueror
Conquistador...
Conquestador my conqueror
Conquestador...
Conquestador my conqueror
Conquestador...

(fading)
Conquestador my conqueror...

  • @WorkinPatriot That's a good piece of trivia. More people should post these little gems. "Conquistador" is just as good as "She's a Heartbreaker."

  • had this on a tape a friend of mine made while i was in europe in the late 60's. never heard it before or since until now. great song from a great talent. saw gen in the early 60's. he sounded as good in person as he did in his recordings. thanks for posting it.

  • I played this first when i bought the 45 and loved it since !

  • I pushed the wrong number on the juke box back in '69 and this became my favorite Gene pitney song. Great......no, I mean GREAT memories of this song. Bolero has its rivals!!!

  • I have the album this is from and was wondering when someone would post it. pinkfloyd59 "an oldie, oldie lover till I die"

  • This was the B-side to his last U. S. hit,She's A Heartbreaker.

  • I thought I knew 90% of the GP songs. But this is one I never heard, and I don't recall him ever mentioning it!

I wonder just where he got the back-up bands to make these recordings, long after the era of recording studio orchestras had passed?

I mean, a gong? trumpets? these were not the Maurice Merry orchestra or Gary Rue combo he traveled with in later years! Did the record label simply provide them?

  • Haven't heard this one since circa /67. This is a good song..sort of an 'off' lyric in there, but GP, he did it again!!!
