Tucson community members will hold a candlelight vigil for Target, the dog who saved soldiers in Afghanistan only to be accidentally euthanized at a Pinal County animal shelter.

Target had been brought over recently from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty. Target was a female shepherd mix, she had been featured in local media and by television host Oprah Winfrey for deeds described as heroic in saving 50 soldiers from a suicide bomber at their Afghan base.

The vigil is planned for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at the Pima County Animal Care Center, 400 N. Silverbell Road.

  • Such a horrible mistake. BUT, shelters HAVE to euthanize because people keep allowing their pets to reproduce with no chance of finding good forever homes for all of them. Instead of trying to get mandates to "stop shelters from killing," work on mandates to stop people from not spaying or neutering their pets! I've never rescued a dog (out of hundreds!) that didn't come from someone trying to make money from dogs, or from someone who didn't care whether or not their pet got pregnant.

  • This makes me cry. Target should get all the honors...

  • A sincere salute to you for your final Salute to Target. She was a true hero.

  • They need to ban animal euthanasia unless the animal is sick and can't be helped. RIP Target, a war hero should have never gone the way you did. </3

  • On the news they were showing T-shirts in honor of Target that could be purchased for $5.00. Does anybody know how to get in touch with the owner to order them?

  • R.I.P.sweet girl x

  • @phoenixliv So sorry.. I know the pain of the loss of a pet on a "normal" type basis!

  • Wouldn't it be nice, in Target's honor and all so many others, if there could finally be a law passed to prevent shelters from killing!?

  • This is just one of the reasons I'm opposed to "shelters" euthanizing

My cat, Trouble was killed last year right after Xmas because we didn't call the shelter EVERY week while he was missing. We would have but my bro had just passed from cancer. Yeah, worst Xmas ever, for me.
