Why don't cops go to jail for the same thing that would put us there?

UNDATED - There are more details about a confrontation earlier this week between an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper and a paramedic in Okfuskee County. The incident was caught on tape as the trooper accuses the ambulance driver of not pulling over when the patrol car was trying pass him. What does the law say about who has the right of way?

It was Sunday along Highway 62 in Paden. Kenyada Davis is behind the cell phone camera. His mother was being transported by Muscogee Creek Nation EMS to a hospital in Prague.

In a statement obtained by The News On 6, paramedic Maurice White said the patrol car came within three feet of the ambulance with its lights on, eventually passing while telling the driver over the emergency radio: "You should consider checking you rearview mirrors."

After taking care of the original call, the trooper waited for the ambulance and pulled it over. White says in his statement: "The officer got out of his vehicle in a state of rage."

A witness, who declined to go on camera, told The News On 6 the same story.

"He was yelling, screaming. He was irrational to me," said witness Diana Walkup.

OHP says before the home video was recording, the paramedic assaulted the state trooper. But, Diana Walkup says the paramedic never touched anyone until the patrolman grabbed his arm.

She says it was the trooper who was out of control.

"We thought, my God, is he going to pull a gun? That's really what we thought. We didn't know if he was fixing to pull a gun or what," said witness Diana Walkup.

So, who had the right of way? The Creek Nation admits the ambulance did not have on its lights and sirens, while the trooper had on his lights, but no sirens.

The News On 6 couldn't find anything that gives one emergency vehicle the right of way over another, but we did find one state law that says: "Every person who willfully delays...an emergency medical technician...in the performance of...care and treatment...is guilty of a misdemeanor."

Investigators aren't commenting, but Diana Walkup believes the trooper was out of line.

"I was horrified. I couldn't believe it. These gentlemen were trying to do their job and they were held up," said witness Diana Walkup.

The trooper's dash-cam video is in the custody of an assistant district attorney in Okfuskee County. She says it will not be released because it's part of the investigation.

  • @lockemdown2893 Right. How many crimes do cops actually stop. The percentage would be very low. Cops come after the fact. Burglars are only caught 5-10% of the time. Cops are a false sense of security. They offer you no real protection. You have to be self-reliant. I caught a person "jacking" my radio(Austin, TX) and held him at bay until the officers show up. So you can call me a pussy, weiny, or whatever and it would be wrong. Ad hominem me all day long. Cops don't make you safe.

  • @lockemdown2893 I find your sheep in the herd metaphor ironic. As you portray yourself as member of the police. Police and government are trained to believe they are superior to you. They are trained to be another body in a uniform following a book of laws because someone that makes more money tells them to. If that isn't a sheep than I don't know what is.

Please try to formulate a coherent argument and support your points instead of swearing and warning all us helpless citizens of the "wolves"

  • 1. I've seen cops go to jail for stuff. 2. I hate lying cops. 3. Cops kick the lights on and go through intersections a lot when a call is not "Priority" but they have to get there fast. In other words, it's not worth running 100+ for and putting others in danger, but they can't wait for every light. Now, that said, if a cop does that and pulls in to get a burger; it's crap and shouldn't. Most supervisors will doll out some discipline on them for that.

  • True, true I hate bad cops.. Not all cops are bad..

  • The problem is .. police think they are the military. They are however, the exact opposite. The military's objective is to preserve peace through the use of violence. The police are supposed to avoid violence through the use of peace. ..this is why they are referred to as peace officers, not soldiers.

  • I have seen police officers lose there job for police brutality, just because you don't see it on the news or in the papers doesn't mean it doesn't happen. PS i am going to laugh when your house is getting robbed.

  • Ur an ignorant fool. Next time u need help when ur getting mugged don't call us either that or wait till we find a "legal" parking spot fyi emergency vehicles can park wherever they please its the law...at least here iN Cali. But ur words are that of someone who Doss not know or understand the law enforcement world at all just think u know all there is to know.

  • @officerM1911 problem is that people are dumb by nature and if someone has an idea of someting. It's allmost inposible to change there mind about it. Just like religeon war on the internet. Do arguments work? nop ^_^

Logic is not someting that people like to use ehhe. Oww well. Kep on fighting and wish the humans can one day, stop being retarded ^_^ And I better make shurre that I'm not one of them, without knowing it ;D

  • @jimbofergus wow. let me know where they are overpaid. I would love to work for that agency!!!

  • @chrstilen5 I so agree. The best way to stop corruption is to change the those in power. Elect a non-partisan Sheriff. Push for a full service sheriff's departments and not county police. Push for county commissioners who are common people and not career politicians. But I believe that you are smart enough to know the answer, but those in your community dont understand. So you have to educate them...

  • @officerM1911 The point was to stop the coruption. But Money is allways nice ;D

  • @chrstilen5 uh...you can... duh its part of the constitution.... You have a legal right to resist UNLAWFUL arrest. I don't suggest that you exercise this right because in normally ends with a .308,.223, .40, or 9mm high powered projectile employed by a SWAT cop lodged in a valuable part of your body. Dont fight on the traffic stop, fight in court. You get paid a lot more...and hurt (or dead) a lot less.
