I have lived here in N.Greece,NY my whole life and on the same property,as a child we always had owls in the woods behind our house and they liked one particular tree thats been here for 100 years,as long as the house has been here, but I have noticed the past 5 years I have not seen or even heard a owl..what happend? where did they all go?

@ChirpTracker hell yeah an owl will tear a human up! I'd feel safer with a bear than a Great Horned Owl ;D

That's my cousin Steve, he's a total ass!

In my (limited) experience following the professional researchers who work with Saw-whets, these guys are so docile, you could literally walk right up and take one out of the tree! But of course we wouldn't do that because that'd be mean.

More or less, yes you have to check every tree. But there are some things you can look for to help make it easier to find them. They usually like small to medium spruce trees, in my experience they are a lot less likely to show up in a large spruce. You can also look for pellets on the ground or "white wash" on the trunk of the tree. Saw-whets rely on hiding and camo, so they will be tucked away out of sight. However, if you do find an owl, be very cautious not to disturb or harass the bird.
