Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was born in Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden, in February 5, 1911. He died of heart-related causes (enlarged heart) September 9, 1960 Siarö, Sweden, aged 49. He was ranked greatest singer of the century by Classic CD (United Kingdom) "Top Singers of the Century" Critics' Poll (June 1999).
This is an excerpt from the TV-special "Sagan Om Jussi" by SVT (Swedish Television) in memory of his 100th birthday.

In Victoria de los Angeles' s biography by Peter Roberts (Weidenfield and Nicolson, 1982), de los Angeles noted that "In despite of technical developments, none of the Jussi Björling recordings give you the true sound of his voice. It was a far, far more beautiful voice than you can hear on the recordings he left".

Jag brukar inte ha lätt till tårar, men när jag hör Jussi sjunga får jag rysningar i kroppen. Känslovågen sprider sig sedan till mina ögon och det finns inga möjligheter att hålla tillbaka tårarna. Det finns en överjordisk skönhet i hans röst, en röst som var så unik att något liknande förmodligen aldrig mer kommer att existera. Tack Ann-Charlotte för dina gripande och äkta kommentarer!
