"Yeeeeee-Ha! Oh, the South's gonna rise again!" So goes HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS' great, banjo-powered theme song to the second installment of the infamous "gore trilogy." And while Two Thousand Maniacs! may not be as rudely in-your-face as Blood Feast, it is a much more accomplished and effective picture, one which still has the power to make first-time viewers squirm uncomfortably in their seats. Essentially a macabre version of Brigadoon, Two Thousand Maniacs! sees the southern residents of Pleasant Valley seeking vengeance for Civil War atrocities by capturing two carloads of northerners and subjecting them to a variety of ingenious and stomach-turning tortures. Among the grisly highlights are a blonde sexpot (SHELBY LIVINGSTON) having her thumb sliced off by a muscle-bound hayseed, after which the demented townsfolk treat her wound by chopping off her entire arm! While her arm is being served up as barbecue(!), her husband JEROME EDEN is liquored up with moonshine, then drawn and quartered by four horses which gallop off in different directions. - Something Weird

It's what you DON'T show, but rather imply, that makes something truly terrifying. The viewer's imagination is far more effective than any special effect.

I think in 35 years time 2001 maniacs will probably not hold up. Gorey special effects only hold up until something more realistic comes along.

  • @thegameulost a classic is a classic no matter if it was made a thousand years ago. Watch the remake (2001 maniacs, starred by Robert Englund) and then tell me if its better than the original. I personally think its pretty lame although it has more gore scenes in comparison to this. Its the orignal IDEA that holds up well over time!

  • It was probably good in its time, but this one definitely doesn't hold up well over time. In this film's defense, maybe it's just that I mean 46 years when I say "over time" (if I recall, the film came out in the 1964). That is an eternity in the film industry. Maybe the fact that many people still remember that this film existed after all that time is an accomplishment in and of itself?

  • This is Natalie Merchant's libidinous carnival in "blood color".....impressionable young people, beware.

  • You mentioned Brigadoon. Is this a musical? If it is, it beats Sweeney Todd as the bloodiest one ever made.

  • @jerrywitaj You seem very ignorant because you assume things about people without knowing them based on one YouTube comment. I went to public schools Brooklyn, NY schools, never to an all girls school, and worked my own way through a Co-Ed college. I am Moderate, not Liberal.

  • @stingheart9 oh shut the fuck up you liberal pussy. this fucking movie is over 40 years old you moron. did you just come out of a cave or something? and by the way, the pendulum has swung COMPLETELY the other way. misandry is alive and well in all movies these days (now there's a word you probably NEVER were taught in college)....in case you haven't noticed. just because you took feminism 101 in your all girls school, you are NOT an expert in sociology, you self righteous little turd.
