Runco's Weekly Music - The Bad Plus - Iron Man

'Iron Man' meets crazy jazz trio...

I don't have much of a write-up for you this week, primarily because I don't know that much about the band. They're called 'The Bad Plus.'

They're a jazz trio... and they remind me of Medeski Martin & Wood (I think mmw is better -- but if you like them, I'm pretty confident you'll like this song as well). This week's selection is off their album 'Give' and it's a cover of Iron Man. So let me convey a couple points: a) if you strongly dislike Iron Man you won't like this cover... b) don't draw any conclusions unless you listen to the whole song... c) it's pretty intense, so prepare yourself.

Truthfully speaking I probably wouldn't recommend the album as a whole (if you're new to the modern jazz genre there are a lot better albums)... but I do like a couple tracks on this CD (track 4 is pretty good; it's titled 'And Here We Test Our Powers Of Observation'). But nonetheless, the Iron Man cover is wild, and worth a listen if you're into this sort of thing.

Imagine this used in the future 'Iron Man 3' trailer! They can probably do it because I did hear the Sabbath one used before I think.. But yeah, 1:04 - 1:57 and just show crazy scenes with Iron Man flying around blowing shit up. How epic would that be?

Sometimes it seems like the group is going between a joke and a hard-core endeavor to transfer the song from one genre's favored instrumentation to a jazz trio. Just in general- not on all their stuff. But I love it either way.
