@yiffytimes I tried several cables and if I have only the 3.5in drive, it works flawlessly, I did play with the jumpers on the 5.25in drives and I got some results

At last one suggestion
Might be that both 5.25" drives are bad. Or it could be a bad IDE connection or a bad cable.
He could try to get one of those USB adapters that will conenct the 5.25" drive into a modern USB port, so he can read the data.
