Doyers Street is crooked, a fact which led to the deaths of many gangsters in the 19th Century. Single gang members from outside the area were tricked and chased down Doyers where, waiting around the bend, was an unclimbable wall. They would be cornered and beaten there.

Modern Doyers Street has Ting's Store, seven barbershops, and Nam Wah, the oldest dim-sum place in town. It's conceivable that some of the toughs in the era of "Gangs Of New York" would have eaten here as older men.
For this was Five Points, once the worst neighborhood in the United States. It has been Little Italy, Sailortown, Irishtown, Jewtown and is currently Chinatown.

Take a pedicab tour of downtown when you come to visit. You will sit down and see this block, as well as Trinity Church (National Treasure), Battery Park, the Broadway Bull, Wall Street, the World Trade Center and the Brooklyn Bridge along the way, all in under an hour.

Better bring a camera.
