Here is the second of two Low German versions of "Roll The Cotton Down" in Hugill's collection. The first was labelled as "De Runer von Hamborg," and I used the Plattdeutsch chorus "Oh Kööm un Beer for mi!," however it is indicated that that and the English "Roll the Cotton Down" choruses were interchangeable. Both versions have a quasi-ballad style in that the solo verses sketch a story of sorts -- compare to the English forms of the chanty, typically composed of independent couplets. Hugill got this from the German chanty collection KNURRHAHN.

  • Great backing group you've got there, Ranzo!

  • @raymondcrooke 'they' can only do English choruses, however ;-)

  • How about wrapping those unique tonsils round my SHANTYMAN? There's a few versions here on YouTube, sung by various vocalists, including me. There's also more verses to choose from, other than those you actually hear sung. Contact me through my channel if interested. In the meantime, see you off Cape Horn!

  • Grandissimo Ranzo!
