NBC News Does a News Story on MyDocuSafe.com

FORT MYERS: If a hurricane hits your home and you lose important things, do you have a way to prove what you own? Even a safe deposit box isn't disaster proof. One Fort Myers man has created an online security vault called, MyDocuSafe.

The program allows someone to take digital pictures of valuables and upload them to the website, mydocusafe.com.

MyDocuSafe can provide clients with a photographer if they do not have access to a digital camera.

MyDocuSafe then stores the photos on three servers in Kentucky, Texas, and Ontario, Canada.

"If you go to your insurance policy and look on the back, every company states, 'please have home inventory,'" said MyDocuSafe creator Stephen O'Conner.

O'Conner created the program in 2004 after Hurricane Charley and Hurricane Frances destroyed his Orlando home.

"My roof caved in, had extensive water damage, lost all my valuables," described O'Conner.

O'Conner tried to recover proof of what he owned from a security deposit box at his bank. But, the deposit box was also destroyed during the storms.

Dan Roy moved into a home in south Fort Myers two years ago. Roy and his partner signed up for MyDocuSafe in October 2007.

"If there's a hurricane or a tornado, we would be able to prove ownership of what we say we own to the insurance company," insisted Roy. "We thought that it would be a smart thing to do and we don't regret it, there's no doubt about that," he added.

O'Conner says he has more than 2,000 clients in Southwest Florida. For an annual fee of $19.95, a client can store 200 pictures and documents onto the site.

O'Conner says that applies for silver membership. Gold members pay $34.95 per year and can store 500 pictures and documents. Platinum members pay an annual fee of $99.95 for unlimited storage.

MyDocuSafe can store six megabites per picture.

As a service to the community, O'Conner said he offers MyDocuSafe free of charge to any church.
