This is a long interview with Frank Zappa from October 26, 1981.
This interview only aired once as far as I know and ironically, Zappa was playing his last concerts at "The Palladium" in New York City.
Covered in this interview is Frank's negative experiences with the stage hands unions.
One of the reasons Frank never played the Palladium after November 1, 1981 was due to excessive stage hand union costs associated with doing concerts at that venue.

The first thing I noted while editing this video is how relaxed Frank is and how good Sandi Freeman was at asking Frank open ended questions and then allowing Frank to answer. For such a long interview it has few commercial breaks.

This is a 5 part interview.

I am sorry for the poor video quality. But even "back in the day" when I was heavily into trading video NOBODY had a better quality copy of this interview.

NOBODY.

For a long time I thought this interview was lost in my tape vault, fortunately, I found it.

Enjoy this little piece of FZ interview history.

  • Thanks!

  • Great upload. Thanks.

  • @Liberty4Ever yes, isn't it wonderful how LOGIC and HONESTY together were able to apply such a powerful filter for him to remove the garbage and really get it down to brass tacks? Then again that was when honesty still had a fighting chance in all of these areas like the arts, poltics, etc. Imagine what he would think of Obama, Hillary/Bill, or Dubya. Stories like the gun-running to Mexico are considered normal somehow? I just have to laugh trying to imagine...he'd have a field day!

  • WOW what a great interview, I think it is the longest I have seen, and Ms. Freeman did an excellent job! FZ had so much wisdom and honesty in his pinky than most people have in their whole bodies these days! Thanks for posting.

  • thank you for sharing these vids @koolstrike

    *hug*

  • Here we have Frank Zappa describing the US government importing cocaine from South America as part of Iran-Contra before it was widely known. Throughout the entire interview, he provided insights, offering truths hidden at the time and now revealed decades later. His analytical mind combined with the fact that he was one of the few nonconformists allowed him to see reality when the rest of the country was drug addled and bamboozled by the slime oozing out of their TV set.

    I miss Frank.

  • just drank whole pot of coffee watching this . Great post! Great interview.

  • This is what youtube was made for. Thanks.

  • Sandi Freeman Geller was replaced by Larry King Live

  • @TigerRocket Right! I saw every British tour from '77 including the LSO at the Barbican (where I met Frank).

No other generation has had an iconic figure from the entertainment world who was such an articulate cultural commentator. In the comments on so many of these interviews people are saying how relevant his thoughts from 20/30 years ago are for today....so yes, here's to Frank.
