Each year millions of people are infected with malaria. Of those affected by the disease, nearly 90% are children; 3,000 dying each day in Africa. In Canada, approximately 300 to 1,000 cases of malaria are reported each year one of the highest rates of imported malaria in the developed world.
Despite the impact of malaria on global health, in Canada, as in the developing world, scientists and doctors still rely on a diagnostic method from the 1800s to recognize malaria.
This November, a group of student philanthropists from Glenforest Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario will join the fight against malaria with the launch of their community awareness campaign, Tumai for Tomorrow. Tumai, which means hope in Swahili, is what these students aspire to provide people affected by the malaria, raising funds to support lifesaving research that will one day eradicate the disease.
You can help the students reach their fundraising goal of $10,000 by making a donation to their campaign or by purchasing a ticket to the Tumai for Tomorrow Gala. Your $60 ticket includes dinner, live entertainment, a silent auction, door prizes and a viewing of the documentary created by the students at Glenforest Secondary School about malaria.

Located in the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, the MRC is a research-based academic centre at the University Health Network and University of Toronto. Dedicated to a lab to village approach, the Centre brings together creative scientists and innovative molecular solutions to solve some of the worlds most challenging and neglected health problems. The McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health is poised on the cutting edge of infectious disease research into the big three malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
