An ecologist, author, and an internationally recognized expert on the environmental links to cancer and reproductive health, Sandra Steingraber is thankful for a rebirth of her family's farming heritage.
She fondly recalls the enjoyment her dad experienced gardening on a small patch in the backyard. A World War II veteran, he loved the quiet and peace of watching things grow in their own time. Yet, this organic oasis was surrounded by farms that had embraced the post-war mania of chemicals -- fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides sprayed on crops with abandon and with no thought to what this drenching was doing to human health and the natural environment.
