but there was so much racism in america at that time.
...that on her break out performance on stage, she was allowed only to appear in plantation dress with cotten plantation background scene.
Ethel Waters was another incredibly talented, strong black woman.

Ethel Waters was one of the great singers of the 20th century. A shame she had to work with such stereotyped racist conditions, but we're fortunate more of her talent has been preserved for posterity.
Looks like one white actor in the senators-- maybe a reference to there being just one African American in Congress at the time?

Ethels version of "Underneath the Harlem Moon" is the best that I have ever heard! Although this was a sterotypical movie, I love it!

Unbelievable! Ethel is a true star! Watching this was the happiest moment of my life. I can never find the words to thank you enough for posting this.
