Former Megadeth members Marty Friedman and Dave Ellefson teamed up with country artist Steve Richards in Phoenix, Arizona on the weekend to record a long lost track by 1950s superstar Buddy Holly.

The song, "That Makes It Tough," is one of the last Holly wrote before his death in a plane crash in 1959. The song was recorded in a rough version by Holly on what are known as "The Apartment Tapes." It was released as a B-side before his death and has popped up on a few reissues, but has never been re-recorded or covered until now.

The song was reportedly recorded for Richard's upcoming album Southbound Train, due out later this year. His country vocals, combined with Friedman and Ellefson's hard-rock backing, should make for an interesting (or really freakin' weird) listen when the song is released.

Some purists may scoff at the idea of former members of a heavy metal group covering Buddy Holly. Hell, some metal purists may scoff at the idea of a country singer stepping into Dave Mustaine's place behind the mic. But Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly, has approved the track whole-heartedly and Friedman is sure that the bespectacled rocker would appreciate their take on the song as well. "Buddy would have rocked it out," he told Associated Press. "It's almost like he's rising from the dead. It's my connection to the legend."
