Saint François d'Assise

Bij zijn enige opera werd de gelovige katholiek Messiaen natuurlijk beïnvloed door talrijke geestelijke werken uit de Franse muziek van het begin van de 20ste eeuw. Het door de componist zelf geschreven libretto was voor hem als persoonlijke geloofsbelijdenis even belangrijk als zijn muziek. Dat de heilige Franciscus de titelrol kreeg toebedeeld, is te verklaren uit diens verwantschap met Christus. Conflictsituaties zijn bewust vermeden, en het geheel ontvouwt zich als een groots ritueel over de zin en het doel van het leven. Het eigenlijke drama speelt zich in het orkest af, en het in alle opzichten kolossale werk krijgt het karakter van een welhaast filosofisch discours over tijd en ruimte, waarbij de verschijning van de engel, de genezing van de leproos en de vogelpreek als kernscènes uitsteken.

seeing it again in london was great. it worked better there. because the second interval was much longer which is what you need after the HUGE second act. Rod Gilfry was on better form with his voice. he just barly surived and was better here than in Amsterdam. Hedei Grant Murphy was a wonderful Angel. Even better than the lady on this vid!
