as long as the page is still defined as the error page which it belongs to then it works otherwise google will not index your sitemap e.g. no 404 definition google will kick back an error, this is not original ive used this method for over 5 years and yes it does work.

Good point.
People have been using it for as long as error pages existed, most likely.
I just decided to create an info product about it because I felt that not many people in my niche knew too much about it.
It's not rocket science ;)
