You've got to understand that these Crusaders believed slaughtering Muslims would REDEEM them of their sins. They believed, - and were told by the Pope that what they were doing was honouring God, and opened a passage to peace at death in Heaven.

well, you have to look at it with a medieval perspective, slaying a non-believer (read: muslim) was not seen as a sin those days. The commandments were only for actions between christians
