Rams rally late to defeat York

Despite trailing for most of the game, the Ryerson Rams men's basketball team turned it on at the right time to defeat the visiting York Lions 103-94 on Friday night at Kerr Hall.

The Rams trailed by nine points heading into the fourth quarter, while struggling to hit their shots the previous three quarters. The offense would come alive in the final frame, outscoring the Lions 37-19.

Boris Bakovic (Toronto) had another strong game for Ryerson recording a double-double with 34 points and 16 rebounds, both game-highs. Bakovic went to the line 22 times, scoring 18 points from free-throws. He stepped his game up in the second half, pouring in 28 of his 34 points. Ryan McNeilly (Toronto) also had a great game for the Rams, netting 24 points, which included five three-pointers. Ottawa native Afeworki Gebrekeresto scored 16 points, while N'Kruma Hylton (Rexdale, Ont.) added 14 points for the Rams.

The Lions were led by Tut Ruach (Mississauga, Ont.) who netted 31 points. John Lafontaine (Whitby, Ont.) added 18 points for York, while Stefan Haynes fell just three blocks short of a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks.

The Rams finished the game out-shooting the Lions, 47.8 percent to 45.9 percent from the floor, and 52.9 percent to 40 percent from beyond the arc. The Rams also grabbed more boards than York, 39-31 while winning the turnover battle, 15-13.

"When we play well, we're pretty good," said Ryerson head coach Glenn Taylor, talking about the difference in his team's performance from the first three quarters to the fourth.

With the win, Ryerson's fifth straight win at home, the Rams record improves to 8-6. York sees its record fall to 4-10 with the loss. The Rams are in action on Saturday when they look for number six in a row at home against Laurentian.
