The correct title is , "God rest ye merry, gentlemen." "Merry" means "well", so the message is to rest well and is addressed to gentlemen.
Frederick Fennell advised us of this at TC in Chicago one year.

I turned 30 yesterday and I'm just finding out about TubaChristmas!! This is awesome!!! I played tuba in H.S. Thanx 4 sharing!! Sadly I don't think there's more than 2 tuba's in my town! :(
