NetworkNewsToday: 11 February 2010 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York - Four days after the referendum results were announced, United Nations (UN) Special Representative Haile Menkerios talked to the press in New York today (11 Feb) about post-referendum needs in Southern Sudan.
He said South Sudan is now in need of a new government as well as state and institution building all of which "would have to be led by southern Sudanese themselves."
While briefing the Security Council on Wednesday (9 Feb), Menkerios noted the significant progress made by both North and South Sudan on a wide range of follow-up arrangements. He added that the two sides are also working towards mutually beneficial arrangements on oil revenue sharing and other economic matters.
When asked about Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir's reaction to the referendum results, Menkerios said that both Bashir and his National Congress Party (NCP) "were consistent in saying we will respect the outcome of the referendum."
He added that not accepting the results "would mean going back to war and the NCP did not want to go back to war."
The referendum was the culminating point of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) ending two decades of civil war between the North and the South that killed some 2 million people and drove an estimated 4.5 million others from their homes.
