BC Stroke Strategy TeleLearning Session, Part 1 of 7
November 19, 2009
Presenter: Dr. Andrew Penn
Acute cerebrovascular events are now known to be more common than acute coronary events. Mild events or TIAs are also now recognized to be very dangerous, leading to acute stroke in 10% of cases within 90 days. That risk can be dropped to 2% if there is rapid intervention. In B.C., if TIAs were managed rapidly, 460 strokes could be averted out of up to 7,300 TIAs estimated occurring annually (based on surveillance studies). With a grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation/CIHR, the true burden of TIAs and the parameters that contribute to successfully avert subsequent stroke is being studied based on the Stroke Rapid Assessment Units database.
