I'm Dr. Lina Ong. The International Training Office of Northern Illinois University hosts a 5 week institute at N I U, for Muslim & non-Muslim Filipino students & adult leaders
from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao & surrounding areas. I'm Dr. Sue Russell. The goal is to transmit knowledge & build action strategies
among participants related to civic education, leadership development, respect for diversity, inter-ethnic cooperation, volunteerism & community engagement.
By drawing on the example of civic society & diversity in the U S A & by understanding the larger regional context in which contemporary conflicts in Mindanao exist,
participants will acquire new perspectives to support grassroots efforts to build closer cooperation & understanding among the different groups in the southern Philippines.
Through a range of formal & informal interactive learning workshops and site visits, the N I U-based institute focuses on advancing 4 general goals:
1, facilitate a dialogue & promote greater mutual understanding & respect between Muslim & non-Muslim youth from the the southern Philippines. 2, create, educate & empower
a new generation of young leaders with a strong sense of civic responsibility & commitment to community development & meaningful social change. 3, increase their understanding of
U S institutions that support ethnic diversity & religious pluralism & 4, promote a better overall understanding of the U S A,its people, culture, values, civic institutions,
& varieties of leadership. Let's change the world. One person at a time. Here & now. Work for human rights, social justice & peace. Rey, thanks for cartoonizing us. Ciao bella!
