Journalist Richard Goldstein argues that gay rights advocates should not expect a hypothetical President Obama to be a leader on gay issues, and should instead focus their efforts on affecting change in the U.S. Congress.

-----

Efforts to overcome discrimination based on sexual orientation have been part of a more generalized agenda of civil rights. These efforts have been played out in the streets, in major institutions, and in the courts.

What do the politics of statewide elections and the presidential race of 2008 tell us about efforts to remedy the effects of discrimination on gays, lesbians and transgendered individuals?

The panelists who will deal with issues of marriage and the family, employment, health and well-being to assess electoral politics and the interests of a gay constituency include Judith Stacey, professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, Sociology Department, NYU Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality and author of In the Name of the Family: Rethinking Family Values in the Postmodern Age; Shannon Minter, legal director of The National Center for Gay Rights and lead attorney for same-sex couples in the marriage case recently decided by the California Supreme Court, and Richard Goldstein, journalist and author of Homocons: Liberal Society and the Gay Right.

Moderated by Robert-Jay Green, Executive Director, Rockway Institute, Alliant International University. Sponsored by the Wolfson Center for National Affairs in partnership with the Alliant International University's Rockway Institute for Science and LGBT Public Policy - The New School

Richard Goldstein writes about the connections between pop culture, politics and sexuality. He is the author of Homocons: Liberal Society & The Gay Right.

  • Umm...it seems to me that most of the hateful remarks on here, are from people who believe in God. If there is a god (which I doubt), he/she must be really proud of you all.

  • It's not a human right, it's a choice to choose who you mix with. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.

If you dont want to "mix with gay's" then DON'T.

Why should they be told that they cant marry someone? Why should people make a dicision on someone else's life?

It's like saying you can't live where you live because you're too different or something.

    It's not fair is it?

    EXACTLY.

  • Respond to this video... It is a good video. Debate is very good if all sides are given equal time. We, the homosexual, bi-sexual, transgender minority are Americans too and deserve equal rights. I love this country and grew up in Neveda but I live in San Francisco so I can have a good life instead of being fearful all the time. Douglas Aexander John Matley

  • @gt1085 What a truly "christian message." God says in the scripture that "Judgment is Mine." Christians like you have cured me of Christianity!1 Thank you so very much of liberating me!!! Doug Matley

  • Your excellancy, Mr. Obama read Ezekiel 16: 42-53 to learn what the Sins of Sodom are (read whole book in context to receive the full meaning). Muslims should read this scripture too to understand our battle with the Christian fundamentalists. The good Christians of the world have cured me of Christianity. Douglas Alexander John Matley

  • All gays go to Hell no Judgement for these people you like the jewish scums and will be tossed in the fire forever, however jewish scums will be your company.AMEN

  • @bagpussarah Yes, I also noticed that American Christians are extremely un-Christian. Very scary.

  • Back up. I think women and men are equal now. Some women may think that because they're not men, they don't stand a chance but if they try, then they'll be great. No corporation will be sexist otherwise it will be brought down, or sued by. Some businesses hire minorities more than majorities so to not look like they're discriminating anyone. If we can get rid of "hate crime" and not teach the slavery of black people and white women anymore, society would be a better place, would you agree?

  • theres nothing wrong with being gay, no matter what your little god says about it, by his standards i either get into a dry relationship or i be lonely all my life, right. Id choose to go to hell. theres alot of decent people down there, If christianity is actually true.

to make a point here, heres something we both share an opionion that guys are sexier than women. Would you have sex with a woman? Its the same thing

Anyway, thankyou for the irrelevant life story. and i hope you find your guy

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf By the way, while some women ARE like that, some AREN'T. If I get mad that I broke a nail, it'll be because it HURT. God says to stay away from sin; He never said we HAD to get married so if you don't like women, I'm personally no worse off.
