Subcision is a minor surgical procedure that does not involve cutting the skin and that consists in separating (scission) areas of fixation or depression under the skin (sub). Skin naturally adheres to underlying facial structures through collagen fibrous ties. These ties limit lateral and vertical movement of the skin. The subcutaneous fatty tissue is distributed between these ties. These very ties, while maintaining the skin in place, can also be the source of cosmetic blemishes by causing folds (e.g. the nasolabial furrow) or localized depressions (cellulite).
