How to start a fire in the middle of winter with a folding knife and fire steel. I will always carry a fixed blade with me when in the mountains. But just to show it can be done.

  • That was great. Simple, effective, and just about anybody can do this (some with proper supervision!). Blessings on you and all the kids, and Mom.

  • @sabr686 When I've been out with the boys, they love to practice with the fire steel. It's fun to watch the curiosity in their eyes.

  • Very informative. Good explanation of your methods. Keep up the good work.

  • @kevi1463 Thanks.

  • Always smart to have a Plan B. Plan C doesn't hurt either.

  • @wildcatactual Yes sir.

  • If you were not an obviously married man and father to multitudes, one could question what you would be doing with a pot of Vaseline in your rucksack, in the middle of nowhere, in company with other like minded men... "It's for starting a fire Officer, honest!"

  • Nice one ...thanks for the VDO bro~

  • Nicely done, I enjoyed at the end when the video was sped up to show that it was a sustainable flame, great job

  • You know you could have just lit your tinder bundle with the fire next to you : )

Great video as always buddy & I agree having all your ingredients prepped before hand is key.

  • Good stuff.

Though I saw a video on batoning with a folder that made a lot of sense the other day. If you do it with the knife open, it's hell on the lockup and pivot points of the knife. If you open it at 90 degrees instead, and let that pivot point pivot while you baton, all the stress stays in the blade and you don't thrash the knife so hard. Might be worth thinking about.

  • yeah man ,that is what we call it too.find your evergreen birds nest ! it is intro fire starting where i live.get a bunch ,especially in wet conditions.

  • I'm sorry, it was great that you and your brother were able to get away for awhile. Didnt see him but heard him. Family is important. We had snow here once in Oct and it melted. Wednesday no it was Thursday it was 65 degrees and this week our highs are in the 40 & 50's. I'm not complaining, we may go out this next week end. Got to get some sleep. Night
