You should have added changing the boot order in the BIOS for people who don't know how to change that.

the live CD runs perfectly all right. I finish the install, but when restarting, Grub will not run, and it immediately boots XP instead.
I am trying to dual boot XP and Linux on two hard drives.

also, the installation fails as well; when i restart my computer, it boots up XP instead of ubuntu.

when i am installing ubuntu, the screen blacks out about every 5 seconds and the screen has some weird moving lines that seem like a graphics problem. Is this supposed to happen?

Does the "Live CD" run OK?
When during the install does it seem to fail?
How for into the install do you get?
Hopefully I cn help you and get this install going.
Also have you tried the "alternate CD" installer? I had problems once with a buddies install and this worked.
Please post how things are going.

Hey, before you installed Ubuntu, was your hard drive totally clean? If not, is it necessary to use a program to totally wipe clean your hard drive?

Normally it is not necessary to format your computer before install as the Ubuntu installer will give you that option. I have though came across a very similar situation where I had to delete all the partitions in a drive and then reformat it. I used a program called G-Parted to do this. If you do delete the hidden partition that is put there by the manufacturer you may not be able to use the recover discs that came with the computer.
