If you look at Kendo competitions it's basically this on crack but not very interesting to watch, some jousting tournaments could do with plate armour where both opponents would beat eachother with swords till the K.O. like in ye'olden times.
A more realistic way would be that they just stopped and didn't start again. There are other competitions with rules like that. But the problem then is that many good fighters can be eliminated very fast because of a lucky hit.
Oh dear, I think sword combat should be MUCH more realistic, it's about endurance along with the skill and the follow-through is part of the skill, they kept stopping and starting again!
@frogsoda ...You mean the way stuff like kendo and sport fencing never "caught on"? Plus, there are tons of people who do this HEMA stuff, and it's still a fairly new martial art.
Besides, they mainly only have rules in the sense that they are counting points. And seriously, what are they supposed to do? Without referees you can't fairly count hits and then you're no better off the 19:th century fencing salles, where keeping score was "ungentlemanly" and winning was "not the point."
