This is a piece i wrote in 2001. Alto voice - Nora Ryan, Vibraphone - Aaron Jester, Piano - Mendel Lee. The text is taken from the sci-fi show Farscape, a eulogy written for one of the characters who died.

We put this together in two hurried rehearsals, so it's not perfect by any means, but i humbly believe the emotional effect came off quite nicely, especially at the climax.

This was my first attempt at creating a "score follow" animation, and the final resolution is more fuzzy than i'd like, for which i apologize. the PDF version of the score can be currently found at darknote dot org slash musictemp slash remembrance dot pdf.

i hope you enjoy it.

update: so i realized after watching this again that i accdientally put up one wrong page in the middle. oops. i don't think it actually matters all that much.

  • good piece, i really like that texture at 01:18 ish... lontano :p

  • thanks very much. :) yeah, no obvious ligeti influences in my piano writing at all.

  • What a beautifully written piece. Very moving and sweet. What else was your inspiration? (I love Farscape btw). The sound of this reminds me of the scoring that artist Matthew Barney uses in his films.

  • i appreicate the kind words. not sure how to effectively comment on the influences that went into the work. It didn't come from specific music so much as musical ideas that i felt were appropriate to the piece. It's a loose chaconne (i love chaconnes). It mixes gregorian chant ideas with bitonality to give it a sense of grace with a tinge of sadness. It uses tall chords (like Debussy or good jazz ballads) to emphasize the beauty of Aeryn's character. That's the big picture overview. :)

  • very instresting. i like it a lot!

kinda sounds mysterious but at the same time, very relaxing..

  • Woah. This is proof that Farscape has inspired some pretty amazing things, I could imagine Zhann singing like that as well.
