  • Hey man, I wanna learn playing the sax. Would you recommend me starting out with this? I'm also a fairly advanced sound mixer and start drooling whenever I see an electric instrument due to the convenience of recording. So that aspect of the EWI has me kind of biased towards a decision on what to get. But in just the terms of learning the sax, do you have any input on what I should lean towards?

  • If you want to learn the sax, you need to get a sax because the EWI will not help you get a nice tone on sax. The mouthpiece is totally different. If you just want to play EWI, you can do that without playing sax, but if you want to play saxophone and are concerned with getting a nice tone, you need to practice sax and work on embochure.

  • Well, I've seen a lot of EWI videos and it seams to be nothing more but just an alternate MIDI controller. I though that it will be something, giving a lot more "real feel" of the woodwind instrument but, to be honest, I can reproduce a lot more realistic trumpet track using Kontakt and MIDI keyboard or my MIDI guitar. Can you control the VST instruments with EWI? Have you ever tried that? Because AKAI's souds are... well rubbish.

  • @ortonnorth Yeah the sound that come with the EWI are not realistic at all. I think it was mainly developed for fusion bands, electronica. Doesn't fit well with a small combo group playing standards.

  • Very, very good!

I have just got an ewi4000 but have trouble getting rid of air overflow compared with playing the clarinet.

    Any recommenadations for a beginner?

  • It took me a while to get used to the EWI. It is quite different from sax and clarinet. Just keep practicing. After about a week of playing it, I finally became more comfortable with the airflow differences. It is a totally different animal compared to a traditional woodwind instrument. The more you play the easier it will come.

  • The EWI does work well in smalll combos..check out Bernie Kenerson and others,..you just have to work with it..

  • You make it sound awesome!

  • @gzydek they come with software that you can hook the EWI up too your computer via USB and play with the tones and sounds. there is a wide server that people can create and post sounds for download. A lot more realistic noises because evidently people are having the same problem; the sounds aren't realistic. so they created versions that sound tons better

  • I have loved this ever since I heard Sonny Criss play it. This is a fabulous version!

  • How does the internal sax and brass sounds in the EWI compare to fx. Arturia Brass 2?

  • hi all. can i changed the internal sounds from my ewi 4000s ? where can i found some sounds like: flute, panflute, oboe, clarinets, altosax, sopranosax, reed. I want to delete all internal sounds and insert these 7 or 8 sounds. For me is enough. thx.
