Coinciding with International Education Week, the GCEP program held its first National Conference on Education. Almost thirty participants attended, invited guests included the American teachers visiting as part of the GCEP Teacher Exchange, teachers who had participated in the previous teacher exchange from Bangladesh to the US, Bangladeshi students, representatives of education-related NGOs, and members of the RI-SOL education and IT staff. The two day conference was held at the Proshika Conference Center in Manikganj, about one and a half hours from the capital city, Dhaka. The conference center provided a quiet and reflective atmosphere in which participants could work without distraction.
he two day event resembled the meeting of a think tank, and considered both operation issues related to the GCEP project, and more conceptual and overarching issues such as the need for education reform in Bangladesh.
During the first day of the conference, participants discussed the goals of the GCEP project: training educators to use computers and the internet in classroom teaching, partnering with international schools on student-centered civic education projects and teacher exchanges, providing public access and programs for community members and disadvantaged groups, and developing sustainable practices for schools and communities.
