Chief Caleen Sisk opens the War Dance ceremony with the goal of reaching agreement with the US Forest Service to recognize the right of the Winnemem Wintu tribe to hold ceremony in an atmosphere of peace and dignity. Past Coming of Age ceremonies on the McCloud River have been interrupted by ignorant and racist boaters ignoring requests to respect the ceremony and, in some cases, abusing the participants with insults and lewdness.
Please contact Regional Forester Randy Moore at 707-562-8737 and/or rmoore@fs.fed.us. Tell him that the Forest Service should impose a mandatory closure of the river during Coming of Age ceremony.
