"Bertrand My Son" written and sung by Larry Jon Wilson on his 1975 album "New Beginnings"
Larry Jon Wilson is one of the most gifted and underappreciated gems in country music with an absolute gift for poetic writing and and a warm baritone that just makes you want to sit down beside him and listen to any story he is willing to tell.
This song written for his son is one of the most precious songs of a fathers love for his child.
I will be posting more of his works as time permits in an effort to share his gift of song and storytelling for those unfamiliar with him
Lyrics transcribed to the best of my ability.
I have a little boy, Bertrand Tyler Wilson is his name. Two and a half now and hes uh, hes named after Lloyd Russell who I knew and loved and after my father that I also knew and loved. And he was born with uh, his feet and legs different than ours. And hes never worried about it, I guess uh, his mama and I worried about it a good bit.. Hes had a lot of casts and braces and things. Hes about the happiest kid I know. So I wrote a song for him
Baseball, volleyball, aint you gonna play at all
Wont you come out and play with me?
Bertrand my son, youve been mostly unaccustomed to the taste of the fruit of the blessin tree
Ive been searching through the forest of life for a taste of the fruit of the miracle tree
Bertrand my son, daddys livin for the day your twisted feet go dancing
From the dark to the light of the joys that other children know
But if livin on the fruit of the tree of love can help your chances
Youll be runnin and playin with them soon I know
Phone calls, Spring Ball, aint you gonna dance at all
Wont you come out and dance with me
Bertrand my son, daddys living for the day your twisted feet go dancin
And wonderin if your sufferin when youre watchin all the other children dance and play
But if the livin on the fruit of the tree of love can help your chances
Youll be dancing and playing with them soon some day
Football, basketball, aint you gonna play at all
Wont you come out and play with me
Someday soon youll see
@1MiniMysterio619 I can' ttell you how my heart aches at this moment hearing of Larry untimely death. My condolensces to you and your family. He was a treasure. Next to Waylon Jennings, he spoke to my soul. THis man emanated such warmth and charisma, had incredible morlas and ethics. His voice has always soothed my heart. I'm so sorry for your loss. He was and is truly a treasure that not many would be able to walk in his shoes.
