After I read about the incident with Joshua Bell in the DC Metro station last year, I spent a good amount of time thinking about what this incident meant. Was it the end of the virtuoso? Had iPods killed live music? Are people too busy to hear? Do most people hate Classical Music? I think there are many reasons no one stopped to listen. Share your ideas after you watch!

  • Show people are too busy to appreciate the beauty of life...

  • -Discernment: in the age of 'experts', few rely on their own ability to appreciate & recognize greatness

-Setting: diamonds in the rough are overlooked all the time...

-Experience: Morewould likely recognize a 'good' musician of the type of music they are accustomed to hearing.

During rush hour was not a 'fair' test.

  • Not surprised that many did not stop

-Time: Imagine telling the boss. 'This guy was playing the violin in the station..."

-Fear: we are told that lingering in such places is dangerous

-Focus: most are focued on their 'to do' list of the day. We are told this is the path to success & happiness

  • @gracieandabraham To not have ANY clearly discernable outward signs of the electrons clicking and the synapses firing in the brain....and the imagination engaged, and peaceful emotions triggered, then there is no connection to the soul as far as I'm concerned. To such a person, the sound is merely noise, cacophony. This appears to describe a large majority of people in this video...and I find that sad.

  • @gracieandabraham So my point is: little to no verbal or physical response=automatically little to no impact on the soul. Conversely some reaction=some impact on soul. I believe music is so deeply ingrained in our system of consciousness, emotions and physiology, that such a stimulus must prompt a reaction, even if it is barely noticeable, no matter how slight a reaction, there must be some to indicate the listener has heard the music and the soul is touched.

  • It's not about Joshua Bell! It's about the music the universal language communicating pure human spirit without words of bias.

  • @baritono81: who knows how many of those people passing by actually had their souls bathed for a moment of soothing respite as they hurried to their destinations and responsibilities. No verbal or physical response does not always equal no response from the soul.

  • @AnimalNitrates : May those children always have their eyes and ears open to the beauty which exisits and lead us older ones back to the beauty.
