TURN YOU SPEAKERS UP!!!!!!!!!!
The engineer gave me a special present on my birthday and put the throttle in th 8th position with a former BN GP40 and former C&NW GP38-2. Turn the bass up and the volume in full, this sounds awesome!!!!!
CORP GP40 ex BN 16-645E3
CFER GP38-2 ex C&NW 16-645E3 (non turbo)

  • @EWS60008 Well, i got 'converted' a couple of years ago mate. On the earlier EMD loco's like the SD40-2's and SD45's etc they didnt use silencers and they really do sound great. Talking of reliability, you gota wonder how these things coped in desert heat, long tunnels and steep grades at 15 or 20 mph on full bore for hours at a time

They never cease to amaze me in their bomb proof reliability. Its a shame they didnt re engineer the 60's with a V16 645 aka 59 but that will never happen

  • @formidable38:..in service on most of the freight workings as the original Mirrlees Blackstone units are showing their age and they tend to have "GE fever" as they tend to fail in the same way that the GE FDL V16's do and I think some railway fans call them "toasters" because of this. I wish EMD supplied the 567 turbo unit to the company that made the Class 35 Hymek as they would have easily lasted well into the late 1990's if not the early 2000's. I do like EMD locomotives as well.

  • @formidable38: To be honest mate, I didn't realise just how reliable and versatile the EMD power units were and at first I didn't like them because of the "ying" noise when idle and they don't have the carisma of the Machbach or the English Electric nor the Sulzers that do. But they have far more positives than negatives as they are easy to maintain, VERY reliable and they seem to fit almost any locomotive. I think if the Class 60's had the EMD 645 units, near all of them would be.

  • @EWS60008 Im shocked! You do know this is an EMD lump in both those loco's?

I thought you guys hated everything EMD, especially a class 60 fan! But yeah, they do sound fookin awesome!

  • Oh man that just made my day!!

    To dam awesome!!

  • Wow! That sounds awesome! I wish the Class 35 Hymeks had EMD power units instead of Maybach as then they would have had a longer service life well into the late 1990's if not the mid-2000's. Although they would be interesting to see them in the Inter-City Executive livery in the 1980's if they made that period and Virgin Trains livery as when BR was privatised in 1995. Virgin Trains ran the Cross-Country services in the UK and I think the Class 35's would have worked that if they had EMD units.
