When in doubt, keep it simple.
Stick to the truth and be honest. People respect that (in <i>most</i> circumstances). Be considerate, but be honest.
I like to explain it this way:
Its not a matter of quality, its a matter of preference. That things don't work out with a particular pair of people doesn't mean that one is not good enough for the other necessarily, but that it just isn't a match.
That gets a little harder to explain the longer the relationship is, but - things change.
