One of my favorite woodworking projects is a butcher block end-grain cutting board. In Part 1 of this two part series, we cover the preparation and construction of the board itself.

Please forgive me for this may seem very amateur, but when talking about the dimensions of lumber you're using, 8/4 refers to what?

8/4 is lumber terminology for wood that starts at 2". By the time we get it into the shop, it's usually around 1 7/8" and mills down to a final 1 3/4".

Prepare for ultimate Amateur Hour but where can I buy these types of woods? I can't find much in the way on google...

Bell Forest Products sells kits for this cutting board. That would be a good place to start. Also look in your local yellow pages under hardwoods.

Are there any food safe dyes/stains that would be appropriate for a project like this? the purple heart and maple make for amazing contrast, but i'm wondering if i can achieve a similar effect with one type of wood. You're a competent teacher man, looking forward to checking out your other stuff!

Thanks very much. When it comes to food items, I really wouldn't recommend using dyes or stains. Even if you used something that was food safe, the wet work surface would almost always deposit color into whatever you're cutting. It would also be nearly impossible to keep one color from running into the other.

Great video. It's a pity it just comes in very low resolution.
